Abstract
Hemangioma is a blood vascular hamartoma, which is a proliferation of anomalous vessels. It can involve any organ of human body. Cutaneous, subcutaneous and muscular tissue are involved commonly. We reviewed 134 cases of hemangiomas developed in soft tissue of trunk and extremities, which were treated at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Seoul National University Hospital, between July 1981 and February 1995. Epidemiological characteristics, clinical manifestations and methods of treatments were analyzed. Hemangiomas were most common(35%) in 388 cases of benign soft tissue tumors which were treated during the same period in our hospital. They were frequent in the second decade and 82 per cent of them were detected under the age of 30 years. The male to female tatio was 1 to 1.3. Seventy five per cent of them complained pain. Ninety one cases of them involved upper extremities, 51 cases lower extremities and 2 cases trunk. They involved elbow and knee and below them in 81%. One hundred and nine cases were treated by excision and eight cases by intravenous sclerotherapy. Twelve per cent of patients who followed up more than six month after excision experienced recurrences. Six out of eight cases of sclerotherapy group showed obvious decrease of tumor size at follow up. Until now excision is the general treatment for hamangioma in the soft tissue of trunk and extremities but sclerotherapy is expected to be another effective treatment modality in selective cases.
